The South African was well on his way to scoring end-to-end wins
aboard Mighty Lad after saluting in the opener on New Leader, but Gold Help¡¯s
jockey Matthew Kellady had other ideas.
Sneaking up on the inside of the last-start winning Mighty Lad,
Gold Help ($31) who was racing without blinkers for the first time, got his
head in front where it mattered to win by a short head. In-form trainer Steven Burridge had been at his wits¡¯ ends
figuring how to tap the winning potential of the son of Dangerous. ¡°He¡¯s not a bad sort but he just keeps overracing and hanging in
his races,¡± said Burridge who has now clocked in winner No 43 to consolidate
his fifth spot on the log, 17 off the leader Laurie Laxon. ¡°He doesn¡¯t work with blinkers and is quite settled then. So we
thought we should drop the gear and I think that combined with his first go
on the Polytrack paid off. ¡°Matty rode him very well. He was nice and relaxed midfield
whereas he was pulling too hard at his previous races. ¡°I thought the leader had the race won but Matty never gave up
and my horse got up right on the line.¡± Gold Help is at his second win, having opened his account in
March over a 1200m race on turf. He is owned by Eight Eight One, who also
races Happy Everybody with Burridge. ¡°Gold Help is no world beater but an honest bread-and-butter
horse that I hope can bring more joy to his owners. They¡¯re great people to
train for.¡± Favourite ($15) Otomodachi ran on strongly for third but was
always going to face an uphill task with his outermost alley. |
