Lightly-raced Unpickable appreciated the addition of blinkers in taking out the $55,000 Class 4 Div. 3 Stakes over 1200m on Sunday. Trainer Steven Burridge went for the blinkers on the gelding after riding him in trackwork after his first-up performance last month. Ridden by Vlad Duric, Unpickable scored by a nose over Another Sunday (Saimee Jumaat) with Street Ruffian (Mark Gallagher) two lengths away third.
Settling in fourth place behind
the speed set by Schmeichal (Robbie Fradd) and Common Interest (Thavi Raja
Barnabas), Duric bided his time until the home turn. After entering the straight
Duric eased the gelding three wide and into the clear where he quickly moved
up to the leaders which by this time included Another Sunday. After sweeping to the lead with
200m to run, Unpickable looked set for a comfortable victory under the strong
riding of Duric, but Another Sunday would surrender. In a tricky photo finish,
Unpickable was judged the winner by the narrowest of margins. ¡°He¡¯s a good bread and butter
horse,¡± said Burridge. ¡°He¡¯s no world-beater but he¡¯ll win
his fair share of races. ¡°His first-up run was average and after I decided to put a
set of blinkers on him after riding him work one morning. ¡°He was having a good look around and wasn¡¯t concentrating. I got Vlad to trial him in the blinkers
and he went quite well. ¡°Hopefully that has turned him around and he can go on and
win another race or two.¡± Unpickable is an Australian bred
four-year-old by Delago Brom from the Never Quit mare Quit Smokin¡¯ and was an A$22,000 yearling purchase. Following his second win from
six starts, Unpickable has now won around $72,000 in prizemoney for the
Happiness Come Stable. |
