PROFILE OF JULIE

The other, some would say "better", half of the Burridge team is Steve's wife Julie. As mentioned previously the pair met in 1993 at Bukit Timah and haven't looked back, but Julie's life in the racing industry started in way back in 1979 in Surrey, England, where she started riding at the tender age of seven.

From her early start at the riding school Julie was quick to find she had both a competitive edge and also an affinity with the horses, which would see her schooling, and even breaking in ponies, at a very young age. Being small in stature, and with a one-track mind fixed squarely on horses, Julie then set about to become a jockey and was accepted into the British Racing School in Newmarket where her real education began.

After competing the course Julie was lucky enough to be placed with Susan Piggott (married to the legendary Lester Piggott) where she fast tracked her riding and training knowledge. Unfortunately her race riding was limited so Julie decided to move to Australia to further her riding career before eventually, after having a stint in Japan re-educating retired race horses and teaching equestrian disciplines, she moved back to England and completed a certificate as a "British Horse Society Assistant Instructor".

It wasn't long after another stint at Newmarket (for Clive Britton) that she was asked to head to Asia for the first time and work for local trainer Bernard Ang, and moved to Singapore in 1993. It was here that Julie met Steve and the two of them joined forces which eventually led to an offer to train in Malaysia.

In 1999 Julie still had the desire and determination to continue race riding so with Steve's blessing, Julie was apprenticed to Alan Jones and later to Richard Collet in New Zealand. Valuble experience and knowledge was gained and 12 months later with a handful of winners under her belt Julie returned to Malaysia to be with Steven and become more involved in training.

Julie loves science and enjoys implementing that into training racehorses. The horses nutrition and daily feeding is done completely by Julie and she takes time to study horse physiology engaging the help from one of Australia's highest sought after equine nutritionists, Dr. Jennifer Stewart and Alan Davie, a leader in the field of science in thoroughbred racing.

These aspects coupled with a feel for a horse has helped immensely in her and Steven's success of the Burridge Stable you see today.
