New Zealand-bred three-year-old Sonic ran right up to his unlucky last start fourth when successful in the $65,000 Restricted Maiden for Two and Three-Year-Olds over 1600m on Friday night.
Sonic finished fourth behind Trinity Treasure in a 1400m restricted maiden last Saturday when he struck severe interference from the winner and subsequently jockey Din Azis lodged an objection which was over-ruled.
However winning jockey Alan Ng was later suspended for the indiscretion. Noel Callow replaced Din Azis on Friday night with happy results. Enjoying a good run behind the speed, Callow was able to get Sonic into the clear with 300m to run. Sonic (Noel Callow) cruises away to his maiden win in Race 2. He raced clear to score by two-and-a-half lengths over Ace Amadeus (Benny Woodworth) with Triumphant Mars (Robbie Fradd) hitting the line strongly for third, three-quarters-of-a-length further back.
Winning trainer Steven Burridge said he had no hesitation in backing Sonic up from his unlucky effort last week.
“He pulled-up so well from the run,” said Burridge. “He’s a tough little horse, but he’s still learning what racing is all about.
“He’s done everything right in his work and he’s run good time tonight.
“On that he should be able to go on and win better races,” he said.
Burridge said it was especially pleasing to get a winner of the board for Lim Siah Mong.
“Mr Lim doesn’t have a lot of horses with me but I just thrilled to train a winner for him,” said Burridge. “He’s a great owner to have in the stable.”
Callow was impressed with the character Sonic showed during the race after he was – in his words - “almost put through the inside fence” last week.
“He was racing tight on the inside of them for a while and it didn’t worry him at all,” said Callow.
“It was a good strong win and it was his first time at the mile.
“I think he’s a horse that has a nice future,” Callow said. Sonic is a son of Tale Of The Cat from the Green Desert mare Manu. He was a $72,500 purchase in New Zealand as a two-year-old. |
