Noel Callow bought up a winning double when Arbitrator broke his maiden status in the $65,000 Restricted Maiden for the Two and Three-Year-Olds over 1600m on Sunday.

Callow had the Australian bred three-year-old in the perfect position throughout the event.

The pace was set by Astra Torres (Barend Vorster) over Rena Cross (Gavin McKeon) ahead of Arbitrator and Regalardo (Mohd Airy).

It was a similar story as the field made their way to the hometurn before Callow became held-up for a run early in the straight.

Callow was able to get Arbitrator clear with 300m and he quickly burst through to hit the lead with 200m to run.

Under strong riding, Arbitrator held on to score by a half-length over Mission Supremo (Soo Khoon Beng) with Rena Cross holding on bravely for third, three-quarters-of-a-length away.

Winning trainer Stephen Burridge said he was happy that Arbitrator had broken a string of bad luck for the Big Valley Stable.

“I’ve got some horses for the Big Valley stable and so has Hideyuki Takaoka,” said Burridge. “Over the past 12 months or so the Big Valley Stable hasn’t had a lot of luck.

“Horses like The Big Gee, Royal Suit, Conundrum and El Dorado haven’t had a lot of luck for the stable of late, but finally they’ve had another win.”

Burridge praised the ride of Callow on Sunday.

“He rode him well and it was his strength at the finish that got Arbitrator over the line,” said Burridge.

“He probably had his birthday today. He sticks on OK and he may like something just a bit longer.

“That’s probably the way we’ll head with him.”

Arbitrator is the son of an unraced Octagonal stallion Anglia from the New Regent mare Rare Talent and was a $20,000 yearling purchase.

Sunday’s victory was Arbitrator’s first in 11 starts and took his prizemoney to around the $60,000 mark.
