Trainer
Steven Burridge almost screamed himself hoarse in
getting Black Ice home a winner in the $75,000 Class 3
Stakes over 1400m on Sunday.
Burridge has
a good opinion of the gelding which unfortunately is
plagued by niggling minor ailments.
Ridden by
Vlad Duric, who notched a winning treble, Black Ice
stormed home to record a half-length victory over Meteor
Mike (Ronnie Stewart) with the tearaway leader Ten Ten
Lai (Nelito Cunha) two lengths away third.

Black Ice (on the outside) takes
the measure of Meteor Mike (Ronnie Stewart)
to give in-form jockey Vlad Duric a winning treble.
Burridge
said Black Ice has a ¡°kissing spine¡± which constantly
needs work on.
¡°He worked really well last Tuesday but came out of his
box on Wednesday morning and could hardly walk,¡±
said Burridge.
¡°He had some chiropractic and acupuncture work and
eventually came good.
¡°I thought his win today was very good under the
circumstances. On weights he didn¡¯t
look well off and the runner-up was weighted to beat me.
¡°To give the second horse 6kg and with the weight
turnaround from their last meeting it was a very good
effort.
¡°Vlad rode him great. I thought he may have been in a
little bit of trouble coming around the turn, but he
kept working on him and got him home.¡±
Black Ice
also overcame the tendency of the track suiting those
racing on the speed throughout the afternoon.
Ten Ten Lai
set a good speed and passing the 700m mark was a good
six-to-seven lengths in front of his rivals.
¡°They did go hard and I suppose the leaders did come back
to him, but the runner-up did have a pretty good run
handy to the speed,¡± said
Burridge.
¡°He is a restricted horse, but you just never know. He
may get away with a higher class race off a light
handicap.¡±
Duric was
full of praise for Black Ice and the way Burridge turned
him out for his success.
¡°Credit must go to Steve and his staff for the way they
turned this horse out,¡± said
Duric.
¡°He was really humming on the way to the barriers.
¡°He¡¯s a horse that needs the
speed on and when the races are run to suit he does have
a very good turn of foot.
¡°He¡¯s capable of winning in
better grade than this off a light weight.¡±
Black Ice,
a four-year-old Australian-bred by Mugharreb from the
General Nediym mare Lady Migaloo, recorded his fifth win
in 12 starts and topped the $200,000 in prizemoney for
the Black Ice Stable with his win on Sunday.
